What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening number that compares your weight with your height. It is used by doctors, insurance companies, the armed forces and police recruitment to quickly check whether weight is in a healthy range.
Example: 70 kg and 5 ft 7 in (170.2 cm) → 70 ÷ (1.702 × 1.702) = 24.2.
Why Indian (Asian) BMI cut-offs are different
Research shows South Asians tend to have more body fat and a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease at the same BMI compared with Europeans. That is why Indian consensus guidelines and the WHO expert consultation for Asian populations use lower cut-offs. This calculator uses the Indian ranges:
| BMI | Category (India) |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 22.9 | Normal |
| 23 – 24.9 | Overweight |
| 25 and above | Obese |
So a BMI of 24 is "normal" on many foreign websites but "overweight" for Indians. Isliye Indian standard wala calculator use karna zaroori hai.
Limitations of BMI
- BMI does not separate muscle from fat – athletes and gym-goers may show a high BMI while being fit.
- It does not show where fat is stored. Waist size matters: above 90 cm for Indian men and 80 cm for Indian women indicates higher risk.
- It is not meant for children, pregnant women or the very elderly without medical guidance.
Healthy weight tips
Aim for 150 minutes of brisk walking or exercise a week, more vegetables, dal and protein, fewer fried snacks and sugary drinks, and 7–8 hours of sleep. Even losing 5% of body weight improves blood sugar and BP. This tool is for general information only and is not medical advice – please consult a doctor for personal guidance.
