Why count words?
Teachers ask for a "500-word essay", universities set word limits for statements of purpose, and job portals limit profile summaries. Social media has character limits too – X (Twitter) allows 280 characters for normal posts, meta descriptions on Google show about 155–160 characters, and SMS messages are 160 characters. This free word counter shows words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time as you type.
Works with Hindi (Devanagari)
Many online counters break on Hindi text. Our counter splits words on spaces and recognises the Hindi purna viram (।) as a sentence end, so it works for Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Hinglish text as well as English. Hindi mein nibandh likh rahe hain? Seedha paste kijiye – word count sahi aayega.
How each number is calculated
- Words – groups of characters separated by spaces or new lines.
- Characters – every letter, number, space and symbol. Note: some Hindi letters with matras are made of more than one Unicode character, so character counts in Hindi may look higher than the visible letters.
- Sentences – text ending with . ! ? or ।
- Paragraphs – blocks separated by an empty line.
- Reading time – based on an average reading speed of 200 words per minute.

Does this word counter work for Hindi?
Yes. Words are counted by spaces and the Hindi purna viram (।) is treated as a sentence ending, so Hindi and Hinglish text is counted correctly.
How many words are in one page?
Roughly 250 words for handwritten A4 with normal spacing, and about 500 words for a typed single-spaced page in 12-point font.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. All counting happens inside your browser; the text is never uploaded.
Reading time kaise calculate hota hai?
Average 200 words per minute ke hisaab se. 1,000 words padhne mein lagbhag 5 minute lagte hain.
Are spaces counted as characters?
